The festival Holi marks the advent of spring with the flowers beginning to bloom. The many colors in the air reflect the bloom around you. The most colorful and vibrant festival of India - Holi - is marked with much fervor and fun throughout the country. Although the festival originated in India and celebrated as a religious festival, it has been adopted in many places around the world.
What is the story behind Holi festival?
Holi has social, mythological and cultural significance. It is a traditional Hindu festival; which celebrates the beginning of spring as well as the triumph of good over evil. King Hiranyakashyap, the king of Asuras (demons) was blessed with a boon which made him felt that he will never die. This made the king arrogant and he demanded even gods should worship him. Prahlada, Hiranyakashyap’s son, never supported his father and worshiped Lord Vishnu. This made the king annoyed and he along with his sister Holika planned to kill Prahlada. Holika wore a fire-resistant cloak and sat on a pyre with her nephew Prahlada, but as the fire roared the cloak flew to Prahlada leading to the death of Holika. Moreover, to the evil king’s surprise, Prahlad survived. Hence, the triumph of good over evil.
Why do we celebrate Holi with colors?
The reason behind celebrating Holi with colors comes from Lord Krishna era. The colors became the part of the Holi festival celebration to commemorate the love of Krishna and Radha. According to mythology, Lord Krishna got the blue color skin because of the poison given to him by the demon Putna. Krishna had an inferiority complex and had doubts that Radha will like him because of his dark skin tone. He feared that Radha might not talk to him due to the colour difference between both of them. So, Yashoda, mother of Lord Krishna suggested him to ask Radha to paint his face with any color of her choice. Radha colored Krishna’s face, and since then they became a couple.
Life lessons to learn from the festival of colors
It is not just about colors, sweets, and celebrations. Behind the lively play of colors and the exuberant gatherings, there are several profound life lessons we can learn from this age-old festival. Holi is a time for renewal, reconciliation, and embracing the richness of life. Let’s take a deeper look at some valuable life lessons we can draw from this festival of colors.
Burn your negative thinking
Hiranyakashipu symbolizes the negative thinking, he thought negative about his own son. One must rid themselves of such negative thinking to lead a peaceful and happy life. Let this Holi mark the end of evil – negative thinking, which harms your mental health. Negative thinking can ruin your life. Get rid of negative thinking and burn it. Some of the most common effects of negative thinking are feeling down and lack of energy. The extent of negative feelings can go from anger, frustration, irritability, to even anxiety and depression, passing through many other feelings, none of them pleasant. Put your negative thinking in the bonfire of Holika Dahan and fill new energy, enthusiasm and positive energy in your life.
Perseverance
Prahalad epitomizes perseverance. He did not give up despite being subjected to cruel treatment by his own father. Prahalad kept his faith towards lord Vishnu in difficult situation. Likewise we must also have perseverance and keep moving in spite of challenges we face in day to day life.
Accept different colours of life
The colors used during Holi have significant meanings, and each shade represents a different emotion or virtue. Red symbolizes love and passion, yellow signifies joy and knowledge, green stands for fertility and growth, while blue represents calmness and serenity.
The festival itself is a reminder that life is not just black and white, but a spectrum of experiences, emotions, and lessons. Life consist of different colors i.e. good times, bad times, problems, challenges, happiness, success and failure etc. Just as we celebrate the colors of Holi, we should embrace the full range of experiences(colours of life) in life—joys, sorrows, challenges, and victories. Each moment adds to the vibrancy of our existence.
Forgiveness and reconciliation
Holi is also a time to forgive and forget. People who may have had disputes or misunderstandings throughout the year often come together to embrace each other with colors, signaling a fresh start. The playful throwing of colors symbolizes the washing away of old hurts and grudges, offering a chance for reconciliation. This is an important lesson for life: holding onto anger or resentment only weighs us down. Holi teaches us the value of forgiveness, the importance of letting go, and the healing power of starting anew. Historically there are several examples and stories of enemies who became friends after they celebrated one Holi together.
Enjoy your relationships
Festival of colors; Holi is a perfect occasion to appreciate, revitalize and celebrate all relationships which matter to you. The celebrations bring you, your family members and friends together and pump in the collaborative spirit among all of you. You enjoy all your relationships and revive the broken relationships on this occasion.
Embrace Change and Renewal
Holi is all about renewal—of friendships, relationships, and attitudes. It signifies the victory of good over evil, as the festival commemorates the legend of Holika and Prahlad. Much like the colors that are thrown during the celebration, our lives too need an occasional refresh. Holi teaches us to embrace change, let go of the past, and welcome new opportunities with open arms. Just as colors transform a dull landscape into something vibrant and new, we too can transform our mindset and approach to life by letting go of old grudges and toxic emotions.
Self-care
One of the most powerful lessons which the festival of colours delivers is self-care. There have been different ways people play Holi. Some people use chemical colours, balloons and dirty water, which calls for self-care during this festive day. Even if someone does not use such kind of dangerous things, some people use gulal and abeer which are in powder form. Therefore, there is a great amount of prep that goes into preparing to play Safe Holi. . Wearing sunglasses and shutting your eyes whenever someone is applying color on you. Oiling hair or Wear old full sleeved and full length clothing to give your skin maximum protection from the colors.
Even when indulging in foods and the sweet milk drink (thandai) , it is important to use moderation in everything you do.
Likewise, in life also one must be aware about self-care. Different people knowingly and unknowingly hurt us physically and mentally. One must have awareness about self as well as surrounding environment. And, when some suspicious things come in mind, best way is to be preventive.
Joy in Simplicity
While Holi is marked by vibrant colors, it’s the simple joys that stand out the most. Whether it’s the laughter shared while applying colors on loved ones or the joy of dancing together, Holi encourages us to find happiness in the simplest things. It’s a celebration of life itself—the joy of living in the moment, of sharing laughter, and appreciating the beauty of connection. This teaches us that happiness doesn’t always come from grand events or materialistic pursuits, but from the joy we find in togetherness and simple pleasures.
Equality
Another powerful life lesson Holi communicate is equality. People celebrate the festival with colors. Once color is applied on the face everyone is the same. The skin color of all becomes the same and we all are equal in all manners. People must burn out all inequality on this day.
Unity in Diversity
One of the most significant lessons of Holi is that it brings people together. Regardless of age, religion, or background, people come together to celebrate this festival of colors. Holi transcends boundaries and acts as a reminder that life is about unity, not division. It teaches us that diversity is to be celebrated, not feared. In a world that often seems divided, Holi reminds us that we are all human beings sharing this beautiful planet and that together, we can make life brighter and better.
Celebrate Differences
In a world where conformity sometimes feels like the norm, Holi is a reminder to celebrate differences. People of all kinds, with different cultural backgrounds, personalities, and life experiences, come together during Holi to celebrate as one. The festival teaches us that our differences are what make us unique and beautiful. Embracing diversity—whether in culture, ideas, or perspectives—makes life more vibrant and meaningful. Just as the various colors blend to create something beautiful, so too can our differences come together to create harmony and richness in life.
The Power of Play and Lightheartedness
Holi is a playful festival, full of energy, laughter, and lighthearted fun. It’s a time to let go of worries, be spontaneous, and enjoy life without taking it too seriously. In today’s fast-paced world, we often get bogged down by responsibilities, stress, and obligations. Holi reminds us to occasionally step back, indulge in some carefree fun, and remind ourselves that life is too short to be serious all the time. Taking a break from the heaviness of daily life and enjoying the playful spirit of Holi can recharge our mental and emotional batteries, helping us live with more joy and less stress.
