Why You Should Take It One Day at a Time?

Being present is a daily battle in today’s society. After all, life can be very overwhelming. We spend a lot of our time being stuck in the past, or worried about the future. It’s easy to get stuck in this cycle since most of us aren’t aware that we’re doing this. We do this so much, to a point where we let the present moment pass by. Instead of focusing on the present moment, something we have control over, we’d rather focus on things we no longer have control of. As a result, anxiety builds, and we develop a sense of powerlessness.
Though we can look at our problems with a sense of hopelessness, I am here to tell you that you have more power than you realize. You have so much control over your destiny, and you can change it whenever you like. However, you can’t do it ruminating on the past nor the future. You have no control over none of that. The way you can gain control and get your power back is to focus on the present moment. Here’s some reasons why you should take it one day at a time.
The Present is all we have now
When you take things one day at a time, you realize that the present moment is all that we have. You also realize how much power there is within focusing on the now. Say you have a long term goal that you want to accomplish in a year. It could be something like losing 60 lbs. You get a workout plan along with a diet plan. This may seem overwhelming to you, thinking about how you must be disciplined for an entire year to accomplish your goal.
When you take things one day at a time, you learn to break down long term goals into short term goals. Short term goals will be day-to-day goals you plan for yourself. Examples are planning the time you will wake up to workout. You use the night before to pick out your workout outfit, and plan your post-workout meal. If you break down long term goals into day-to-day goals, and remain consistent, you will be well on your way to accomplishing your end of year goal. This is the power of being in the present moment.
Small wins add up overtime
Taking back power over your life means having small wins everyday. You want to use the day to make progress towards your goals. You workout and eat healthy today. That’s a win. Even if you wanted to accomplish a goal such as write a book. You write for one hour per day for a year, and in due time you’ll complete your book. This is another win.
You celebrate the small win today, and then plan to do the same tomorrow. When tomorrow gets here, you have to let go of the previous day. Keep stacking the small wins up, and it’ll add up to a big win in the long term.
It’s a marathon, not a race
Think of taking it one day at a time like running a marathon. If you want to make it to the finish line, you must pace yourself during the marathon. If you don’t pace yourself, you will eventually tire yourself out. This is the same way you want to approach taking things day-by-day.
Taking things one day at a time helps you pace yourself during the marathon. You’re not worried about reaching the finish line. You’re focused on taking step after step to get closer to the finish line. It’s important to do so if you want to eventually reach the finish line.
Eliminate yesterday’s anxieties
Ruminating, or thinking deeply, about the past can cause issues. Some of these problems may include overthinking, catastrophizing, and unnecessary anxiety. You develop a habit of thinking about past events asking “Why did that happen? Why did that person do that to me? If only I could’ve done this instead of that.” Because we often worry about what could be, or what could have been, we often miss what is going on around us. As a result, we don’t take advantage of what we can control, which is today. We often let the past rob us of the present, leaving us feeling hopeless.
Focusing on today means exercising your power on what you can control. The actions you make today either creates a better tomorrow, or a regretful yesterday. It’s important to practice mindfulness to remain in the present. Whenever you find yourself dwelling on yesterday’s events, bring your focus back to the present moment. Doing so will make life more manageable.
Creating a better life
When you take things one day at a time, you will realize how much time you have during the day. You’ve always had this amount of time previously, but you wasted most of it either stuck in the past or worried about the future. Now that you are in the present moment, time moves slower. You can take advantage of that and utilize the time to create the life you’ve always wanted.
You can use this time to spend with your loved ones. Instead of worrying, you’re in the present moment, and can give your full attention to them. As a result, you’re improving your relationship with the people you care about most. Perhaps you always had a goal to learn a new language, or even write a book. Now that you’re giving your attention to the present moment, you have more time to give to those goals.
As you can see, we can waste precious moments focusing on either the past or the future. Taking things one day at a time can be a great benefit to you. The next time you feel like you’re dwelling, do yourself a favor and come back to the present moment. Focusing on the present moment creates a better past, and an even better future. Take back control of your life by taking life one day at a time.
